There was once a mother with three children. But this is not a kind story. They were known as the hunter’s children: the eldest, the middle, and the youngest. Few ever spoke of their father, and fewer still asked where he had gone. The eldest was quiet and reliable, raised to take over the hunt when their father was gone, whichever came first. The middle child, shy around strangers but wild at heart, was scolded often for her restlessness. When the eldest was away, she took over the chores, though never without complaint. And the youngest, loud and untamable, wanted nothing to do with the quiet life their family lived.Their mother taught them everything she knew. She taught them to track, to aim, to kill, and above all, to survive. The eldest, already skilled from years under her care, had begun to take on hunts of their own. But their mother’s lessons were never about glory. They were about endurance, and fear, and the day she would no longer be there to protect them. One winter night, under a sky too quiet to be trusted, the eldest heard screams carried on the wind. Smoke rose through the trees. By the time they reached the clearing, it was already too late. The villagers, suspicious of their mother’s strange ways, had come with torches and fear in their hearts. They boarded the doors, doused the walls, and set the house ablaze, never knowing the eldest was still in the woods. The eldest could only watch as the fire consumed their home, their mother, and their two siblings. The cries faded before the roof fell. When the smoke cleared, there was nothing left but ash and silence. With trembling hands, the eldest gripped their rifle and disappeared into the dark. But that was not the end. You may wonder how they survived. How long could one child endure the winter’s hunger and the forest’s indifference? Days bled together. The cold grew cruel. Their strength began to fail.At last, beneath the roots of an ancient tree, the eldest sank down to die. Their rifle was frozen in their grasp, breath shallow, eyes closing on a world that had never shown mercy. But the forest was not yet finished with them.In that twilight between life and death, something stirred. A presence older than the snow itself.A deer stepped from the mist. Not of flesh, but of spirit. A creature of shimmering frost and quiet grace. It said nothing. It only touched the rifle in the eldest’s hands. Warmth spread through the metal, up their arms, and into their chest. And the eldest dreamed of laughter not their own, of distant bells, and of a voice that whispered, “Not yet. There’s still someone waiting for you.”When they awoke, they were alive. Changed. Something of the forest now lived within them, the breath of the deer spirit, the echo of the wild. They wandered until they found another lost soul at the forest’s edge, someone whose story intertwined with theirs, as if the woods had planned it that way.But though the spirit lingers within, the eldest never fully crossed into its realm. They remain between worlds, human heart and spirit-touched body, forever drawn to the strange and the uncanny. They study the shadows, even when they make their hands tremble. They look into the dark, hoping to understand what took their family and what saved them.Because the forest remembers. The ghosts remember. And so do they.
